We Run All The Popular Magic The Gathering Formats

We Have What You’re Looking For!

When It comes to Magic the Gathering The Brevard Gaming Lounge offer a variety of formats to meet our members desires.

Modern

Modern is a constructed format & therefore adheres to the following constructed rules:

  • Minimum of 60 cards

  • No maximum deck size, as long as you can shuffle your deck unassisted

  • Up to 15 cards in your sideboard, if used

With the exception of basic lands (Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, Forest & Wastes), your combined deck & sideboard may not contain more than 4 of any individual cards, counted by its English card title equivalent.

Played upon request

Commander

The Commander format is all about picking your hero & building a deck around them. In this casual, multiplayer format, you choose a legendary creature to serve as your commander & build the rest of your deck around their color identity.

  • 1 commander card (legendary creature)

  • 99 other cards

  • Only 1 copy of any card, except basic lands

  • All cards must be in the color identity of the commander

  • 2–6 players

  • Free-for-all multiplayer format

  • Each player starts with a total of 40 life

  • All commanders start in their command zone

  • Take turns in clockwise order

  • Last player standing wins

We play Commander every Saturday and Sunday at 6:00 pm

Booster Draft

At the start of booster draft, each player opens a booster pack & picks a single card. (Don’t show the other players what you pick!) Then everyone passes the rest of their pack to player on their left, each player then picks a card from the pack they just received before passing again. This process continues until all the cards in those packs have been drafted. Then each player opens a second pack, but this time, you pass the pack to your right. After all those cards are drafted, you do the same with the 3rd pack, passing to the left again.

Once all the packs have been drafted, everyone builds a deck from the cards they have selected. You may add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains & Forests) to your deck as you’d like, but each deck must have at least 40 cards.

Every Friday at 6:00PM

Sealed League

Unlike constructed games—where you arrive with your strategically created deck—in a sealed deck tournament, you build a new deck from 6 unopened booster packs at the start of the event.

The guidelines require that you build a minimum deck size of 40 cards, but you can add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains & Forests) as you’d like, even if they weren’t in the booster packs you opened.

We Run A Sealed League Every Saturday at 6:00 (Games are scheduled between opponents each week)

Two-Headed Giant

Two-Headed Giant is a fun multiplayer format where two-player teams battle against one another. Each team takes actions as a team rather than individually. There are some rules for Two-Headed Giant that differ from other multiplayer formats:

  • Each team has a shared life total that starts at 30

  • Each team takes their turn together, meaning they draw as a team, attack as a team, block as a team & go through all phases of the turn as a team.

  • The team that goes 1st skips their 1st draw step.

  • Teams do NOT share any resources other than life--meaning players can't share cards in hand or mana. The short way of remembering this is any reference to "you" on cards still means each individual player.

  • Each player can block any creatures that are attacking them, their teammate, or any planeswalker their team controls.

  • Teams may share information & strategize together.

  • The 1st mulligan is to 7 cards, then each mulligan afterward results in 1 fewer card (6, 5, 4 etc.).

Your teams loses when their life total is 0 or less, when they accumulate 15 or more poison counters, or when either team member is unable to draw a card from their deck. Damage & loss of life happens to individual players & the effects are applied to the team's shared life total. The same is true of gaining life. For example, if 1 player gains life, the team’s life total goes up, but only 1 player’s “whenever you gain life” effect triggers.

Effects that read "each opponent" or "each player" affect each team member separately. For example, when Rabid Bloodsucker enters the battlefield, each player would lose 2 life—meaning each team loses 4 total life.
